The glaring issue with the Manchester City midfield was impossible to ignore as Enzo Maresca’s side were beaten 3-0 by Arsenal in the FA Community Shield. Elliot Anderson has only been a City player for less than a week and Mateo Kovacic played a role that isn’t suited to his strengths. Also, Phil Foden wasn’t at his best and all of those factors combined saw City’s engine room splutter against Mikel Arteta’s side. There is also a hole in the City midfield with Bernardo Silva having left the club and Rodri set to sign for Barcelona. Manchester City have been heavily linked with a move for Chelsea’s divisive midfielder Enzo Fernandez. Watching Sunday’s match, it is clear to see why Enzo Maresca wants to add the Argentinian international to his squad.
Manchester City will enter the 2026-27 season without Bernardo Silva and Rodri. Both players have been inspirational figures for their team. Pep Guardiola’s midfield has been built around the pair and the success City achieved during the Guardiola era speaks to how crucial the pair were. Their resumes speak for themselves as players. Rodri and Bernardo Silva were also inspirational figures and leaders on the pitch. Replacing that aspect of their play is no simple task.
In time, Manchester City’s next batch of midfield leaders will emerge. As of right now you couldn’t say who they are. Mateo Kovacic brings experience to Enzo Maresca’s squad. But he isn’t an inspirational midfielder ala Bernardo Silva and Rodri. Elliot Anderson needs time to adjust to life at City and he does look like he will become a leader in Manchester City’s midfield. Phil Foden has leadership aspirations but he needs to find his best form to take up such a role. Nico Gonzalez remains a player on the periphery of City’s starting eleven. The Spanish midfielder cannot be considered a leader in City’s midfield yet, if he ends up as one at all.
There is a leadership void in Manchester City’s midfield. You could see that against Arsenal. Manchester City have been heavily linked with a move for Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez. Say what you will about Fernandez as a person but he does have leadership traits that Enzo Maresca’s squad needs.
I’ll add that I am not a fan of Enzo Fernandez and his antics off the pitch or at times on the pitch. It is almost impossible to be. The potential of Enzo Fernandez signing for Manchester City has been frowned upon by large sections of City supporters. That is understandable.
Lyall Thomas and Kaveh Solhekol have reported for Sky Sports that Manchester City remain interested in signing Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea despite the fact that Chelsea’s self-imposed deadline has passed. Enzo Fernandez has attributes that City need. He has been Chelsea’s captain so Fernandez has leadership traits. Enzo Maresca’s side need this. Enzo Fernandez is an intelligent midfielder who can crunch into tackles when the game needs it. City need this. Enzo Fernandez is a technically gifted player which would lift the level of Manchester City’s midfield. City need this type of acquisition. The case is clear to see as to why City want to sign Enzo Fernandez when you step back and put aside his off and on-pitch antics.
Manchester City will not find a player who can replace Rodri, nor will they find a player who is a like-for-like replacement for Bernardo Silva. That is an impossible task. What they will do is find a selection of midfielders who can combine to reform City’s midfield in their own way. Elliot Anderson is one. Ayyoub Bouaddi is likely another. Enzo Fernandez looms as another. Enzo Maresca’s midfield does need a player who has leadership traits and mongrel and as unpopular as he is perhaps Enzo Fernandez is that player.
