England supporters were thrilled with the Three Lions' 4-2 World Cup victory over Croatia - but one controversial flashpoint has left some incensed

England commenced their hotly-anticipated FIFA 2026 World Cup campaign with a thrilling 4-2 victory over Croatia in Arlington, Texas on Wednesday, already placing Thomas Tuchel's side in pole position to secure a top-of-the-pack finish in Group L.

In what will surely represent their stiffest test of the group stage as clashes against Ghana and Panama await, England raced out of the blocks to take a 1-0 lead when Harry Kane's re-taken penalty made its way past Dominik Livakovic before a stunning strike from gifted playmaker Martin Baturina restored parity some 14 minutes later.

The Bayern Munich talisman would reignite the Three Lions' lead just shy of half-time, but a hectic period then saw Croatia equalise once more through Petar Musa heading into the interval.

However, England did not surrender after one-time Birmingham City starlet Jude Bellingham put his side ahead for the third time after the break as Tuchel's men began to enjoy cruise control in the affair and, having rarely been challenged by Croatia, substitute Marcus Rashford put the contest beyond doubt with a coolly-placed finish on the 85-minute mark.

England dominated large portions of the encounter, which will serve as a sign of significant encouragement to the Three Lions faithful given the manner in which they were able to control and dispose of a side who have outperformed them at the last two editions of the World Cup - making it all the way to the final against France in 2018 before losing out to eventual winners Argentina over in Qatar three-and-a-half years ago.

It was not, however, a completely happy opening affair for every England supporter, some of whom were left incensed at decisions made by security ahead of kick-off at Dallas Stadium.

England fans forced to take down flags during Croatia victory

For many England supporters who follow their nation both home and away, it's something of a ritual to hang St George's flags around the stadium before the match kicks off.

Such flags, often featuring club names or locations, are particularly prominent at major tournaments.

However, a number of England fans were "appalled" when stewards instructed them to take the flags down ahead of kick-off. That's because many flags were placed over official FIFA hoardings, which has been banned for this summer's tournament and left stewards to order the removals.

It's said that stewards had even threatened to confiscate the flags if fans did not take them down, citing FIFA guidelines on the matter.

One fan named Dan, who is London-based and supports Arsenal, described the rules as a "joke" in light of extortionate ticket prices to even attend the showpiece tournament in North America, arguing that the situation represents "another occasion where football fans are getting treated like cattle."

Ultimately, however, those are the rules, and while a whole range of decisions made by FIFA and, more prominently, the Trump administration in the build-up to the World Cup have rightly attracted no shortage of controversy, supporters may now have to think twice before hanging up flags at further matches.

England's next games at the FIFA 2026 World Cup

England will return to action next Tuesday when they face Ghana in their second group match at Boston Stadium, where fans will no doubt be hoping that certain stewards potentially turn a blind eye to FIFA's guidelines.

It will be yet another test for Tuchel's side, though it's one which they will be expected to overcome before meeting an opponent of the 2018 World Cup in Russia in their final group fixture in the form of Panama on June 27.

England may already have one foot in the round of 32 following an emphatic victory over Croatia, who are undoubtedly the second-strongest side in the Three Lions' group and will share ambitions of progressing far at a third successive World Cup with the likes of Baturina, Josko Gvardiol, Mateo Kovacic and Luka Modric in their ranks.

Should they win their group, England will face the third-placed team of either Group E, H, I, J or K at Atlanta Stadium on July 1.
