„Why not…“: Upamecano talks about transfer to PSG

Dayot Upamecano has spoken about his sporting future – and sent a clear signal to both FC Bayern and potential suitors. The Frenchman is not ruling out an extension in Munich, but is deliberately leaving a back door open.

In an interview with French broadcaster Téléfoot, the central defender was asked about a sensitive topic: whether he could imagine playing for a club with his good friend and national team colleague Ousmane Dembélé in the future. Upamecano’s answer was remarkably relaxed: „Why not? But we’re in no rush,“ he explained.

A sentence that seems harmless at first glance, but on closer inspection has enormous explosive power, because Dembélé is known to be under contract with Paris Saint-Germain – the club that is being traded as a possible buyer for Upamecano. In France, PSG has long been rumoured to be ready to actively enter the poker game for the Bayern defender in the summer. Upamecano’s contract is known to be expiring, and he is officially allowed to negotiate with other clubs from 1 January.

The 27-year-old’s tone is particularly remarkable. No commitment, no denials, no threats. Upamecano appears deliberately relaxed – and that is precisely what gives his statements additional weight. The Frenchman is aware of his position on the market and the strong basis for negotiation that his expiring contract gives him.

Extension at FC Bayern still possible

At the same time, Upamecano made it clear that staying in Munich is by no means out of the question. When asked directly whether a contract extension at FC Bayern was also conceivable, he replied clearly: „Yes, of course.“

Those responsible at Säbener Straße have been stressing for weeks that they are keen to extend Upamecano’s contract. Sporting director Christoph Freund recently spoke of „good and intensive talks“ with the player. Although a breakthrough has not yet been achieved, the player’s statements show that the door is still open.

However, it is also a fact that Upamecano will not make a hasty decision. His statements indicate that he wants to keep a close eye on further developments – both in sporting and financial terms. For FC Bayern, this means that the pressure remains high. The closer the end of the year approaches, the greater the risk that financially strong top clubs such as PSG will get serious.
