Why Pope Francis missed Argentina’s World Cup triumph over France

In an interview with La Nación in 2023, the late Pope Francis revealed the strange reason why he was unable to watch his nation, Argentina, lift the World Cup after their penalties victory in the final of the competition against France in 2022. The Pope sadly passed away at the age of 88 on Monday after a battle with ill health.

The 266th Pope was a lover of football. Despite a self-declared love for the beautiful game, the Argentine pontiff was unable to enjoy his nation’s first triumph in the sport’s biggest competition since 1986. This is due to a promise he made to never watch television again. In 1990, he promised Lady Carmen that he would never watch TV again, and that was a promise he largely kept until his recent death.

When asked about his decision to give up television, he said, “I can’t do this to myself, it doesn’t help the heart.” Pope Francis was a fan of San Lorenzo, the team from his hometown in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
