Serie A side Milan are keenly pursuing the signature of Ralf Rangnick and want him as their next sporting director. The ex-Manchester United manager is the manager of the Austrian national team and there is a chance he leaves the role days before the World Cup.
La Gazzetta dello Sport add some details to the scenario, saying that the German has been very impressed by the offer on the table from Milan and he felt positive after the conversation with Gerry Cardinale. So much so that another discussion has been scheduled for next week.
At the same time, Austria have put forward a deal for him to stay with the national team beyond the World Cup. That offer has a deadline of about a week, which is the time Rangnick will take to mull over his options. But as things stand, Milan are somewhat optimistic he will join them. This is especially because they want him in a directorial capacity and not as manager as Rangnick had rejected the chance to become the ‘allenatore’ back in 2020.
It feels like Milan are going after a candidate who has a major chance to make an impact as manager at the highest level. The strategy is a bit risky, considering what the World Cup can mean to people.
Milan’s project could be appealing but considering the context, they should have other options on the table.
