Why Ralf Rangnick has big doubts over Milan move | OneFootball

Serie A side Milan have been pursuing a move for Ralf Rangnick in an attempt to hire a new sporting director. While they have presented an offer, he seems to have doubts over the deal.

This comes directly from the Austrian press. Wiener Zeitung – via Calciomercato, report that the ex-Manchester United manager isn’t sure if his demands will be met at the Rossoneri. The club have agreed to meet those for now but the German isn’t certain if they will live up to the promise.

He fears he will be surrounded by too many influential figures and this will undermine his decisions and planning. 

The other proposal Rangnick has in hand is from the ÖFB, the Austrian Football Association.

President Josef Pröll received the green light from his board members at the end of 2025 to extend his contract, after an initial stalemate. The reason for that were his excessive demands. The executives feared he might take control of the federation and transform it into a ‘Rangnick corporation.’

They thought they had all the power. They were convinced Rangnick, after having rejected offers from Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, was no longer attractive for the major leagues, which is why they initially offered him a contract extension at just over €1 million, which is his current salary.

Rangnick fears warranted

Milan’s recent track record suggests the politics at play can undermine someone like Rangnick, who is very radical in his ideas. They have offered him the chance to sit at the top of the sporting project but many figures at the club have more say than needed over that.

The priorities at Milan have rarely been sporting and Rangnick is right to seek written guarantees about it.
