Sonia Bompastor is pleased with the way Chelsea are getting stronger as the season approaches crunch time – and says they need to be at their best when they face London City Lionesses this weekend.

The Blues are second in the league following a midweek win over Brighton and Hove Albion, and they are also still celebrating their first trophy of the campaign after winning the Subway Women’s League Cup last weekend.

And Bompastor wants to see more of those kinds of performances – starting with the tough prospect of London City Lionesses.

“They are a team who only just came into the WSL this season, but as you can see, they are already performing at a really good level,” Bompastor said in a press conference. “We know every game until the end will be a challenge for us.

“The match on Saturday will be tough because they have enough quality to hurt us, but on the other hand, we also have a lot of quality and will be prepared to perform at our best level.”

Sonia Bompastor: Chelsea will have their fans at the Den

The match will be played at Millwall’s Den rather than London City’s usual home ground of the CopperJax Stadium in Bromley due to a fixture clash, and Bompastor thinks that might be an advantage for her team.

“We are very used to playing at different grounds as a team, and the players in the squad are used to playing at different grounds, even when it’s away from home,” she said.

“I think it’s quite good for us to be at a more neutral ground, because London City won’t be playing at their usual home. They will have their fans there, but we will have our fans as well. In terms of the experience we have in both squads, it won’t make too much difference.”
