Why Sunderland recalled Milan Aleksić and what it means for January window plans

Sunderland Echo reports that Sunderland have recalled Milan Aleksić from KS Cracovia to clear space for Arthur Masuaku’s proposed six-month loan to RC Lens, a deal likely to be concluded within the next 24 hours.

The move is not about first-team plans, it relates to a FIFA rule capping international loans at six per club. Timothée Pembélé’s switch to Le Havre last week took Sunderland to that limit.

With six players already out on international loans, Sunderland needed to free a slot. U21 exemptions exist but do not apply to Aleksić, who has been at the club for only two years.

Aleksić had limited minutes in Poland, eight appearances and two assists, so he was the likeliest recall. Masuaku’s switch is seen as positive and it eases Sunderland’s wage bill.

He has already played for two teams this season, so cannot join another club this window. With first-team chances slim, he may rely on U21 football and a departure later this year appears increasingly likely.

January plans are unchanged, the wide areas remain a position Sunderland would strengthen if the right option emerges. Abdoullah Ba and Ian Poveda need permanent moves abroad or domestic loans. Dan Neil cannot depart on loan to Rangers or to Bundesliga clubs, he would need a permanent move or to wait until summer when his contract expires, and there is interest from Sheffield United and Ipswich Town.

A planned loan for Ahmed Abdullahi would also hinge on domestic interest.
