Spurs continue ambitious summer of spending before transfer deadline

Tottenham insist they have made a “statement of intent” with the signing of Omar Marmoush.

Spurs completed the second part of their long-awaited high-profile double deal with Manchester City on Thursday, announcing the arrival of Marmoush on an initial season-long loan with an obligation to buy next summer for a fee of around £60million including add-ons.

It follows Tuesday’s signing of Brazilian winger Savio - AKA Savinho - from the same club in a permanent transfer that could be worth a total of £85m.

“Omar is a quality player and his arrival represents a statement of our intent,” said Tottenham’s sporting director Johan Lange.

“He has demonstrated that he can perform at the highest level, and we believe he can play a major role in what we want to achieve over the coming years.

“We are delighted to welcome Omar to the club and look forward to seeing him make a significant contribution as we continue to build a strong squad to realise our ambitions.”

Marmoush is the eighth new arrival so far of a big-spending summer transfer window from Tottenham, who are showing real ambition for Roberto De Zerbi’s first full season in charge after successive 17th-place finishes in the Premier League and only narrowly avoiding relegation to the Championship on the final day last term.

In addition to Marmoush and Savio, the club broke their transfer record twice in the space of just a few days last month as they lavished around £185m combined on midfielders Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes.

They also spent £52m to land centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton, having already welcomed defenders Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi, plus goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, on free transfers.

Tottenham might not be finished in the market yet either, with Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo remaining a player of interest ahead of Tuesday night’s (September 1) 11pm BST transfer deadline.

Spurs are also admirers of Nottingham Forest full-back Neco Williams, though any deal for the Welsh international appears very difficult to pull off as things stand.

“Omar is exactly the kind of player we want at this club - ambitious, hungry and determined to make a difference,” said De Zerbi following the signing of Marmoush.

“He has incredible attacking quality but what I also love is his desire to improve and to win.

“He brings pace, intelligence and a real threat in front of goal, and I believe he can take our attacking play to another level."
