Why Young Boys Berne v Lyon will not be broadcast in France

Olympique Lyonnais travel to Switzerland on Thursday to face Young Boys Berne at 18:45 in matchday seven of the Europa League league phase, but the game will not be televised in France.

According to L'Équipe, the blackout stems from the Swiss club’s shirt sponsor, Plus 500, which has been banned from advertising in France since 2016 under the consumer code. Lyon are leaders in the league phase.

Exposure of such brands at sporting events, including on shirts, blocks the broadcast of clubs carrying the sponsor, such as Young Boys and Legia Warsaw in the Europa Conference League this season. The same restriction halted coverage of Berne v LOSC on 11 December, replaced by a highlights segment with the logo blurred in Canal+’s Soir d’Europe programme.

Canal+ will not risk breaching the law, which could lead to a fine of up to 100,000 euros. Instead, it will provide live commentary without pictures, with statistics and infographics in their place.

Salim Dib will lead the call alongside consultant Grégory Sertic on Canal+ Live 10 and on the channel’s Twitch, Facebook, YouTube and Dailymotion platforms.
