FC Bayern are through to the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup after beating Union Berlin 3-2 in a thrilling cup tie on Wednesday evening
FC Bayern are back in the last eight of the DFB Cup for the first time since the 2022/23 season. Munich celebrated a narrow 3:2 away win at the Ironmen in a fiercely contested match with two Union goals conceded and two penalties converted by the Berliners
The quarter-finals of the DFB Cup will be drawn next Sunday, with the matches taking place on February 3-4 and February 10-11, 2026
Vincent Kompany made three changes to his starting XI compared to the 3-1 home win against St. Pauli in the Bundesliga: Dayot Upamecano, Michael Olise and Josip Stanisic came into the team for Minjae Kim, Tom Bischof and Raphaël Guerreiro

Bayern were the dominant team right from the start and had the first goal of the game after just 30 seconds through Olise, but his low shot was no problem for Rönnow
With more than 70 per cent possession, Munich pushed Union deep into their own half, but they did not create any real goal threat until the 12th minute, when Union attacker Ansah unfortunately deflected the ball into his own goal with his thigh following a long corner from Kimmich
Bayern kept the pressure on after the break. Kane made it 2:0 in the 24th minute and the goal came again from a corner. The Englishman got through in a scramble and headed the ball into the Union box from close range. Rothe tried to save on the line, but the ball bounced off the bottom edge of the crossbar and into the net
Things got curious in the 35th minute: after a Union throw-in, Tah touched the ball with his arm. Referee Martin Petersen allowed the play to continue. Just under 90 seconds later, the VAR intervened. After an on-field review, Petersen awarded a penalty. Leopold Querfeld held his nerve against Neuer and reduced the deficit to 1:2 in the 40th minute
FCB were hardly impressed by the goal they conceded, but Munich restored their two-goal lead in first-half stoppage time and again it was an own goal
After a sharp free-kick, Diogo Leite tried to clear the ball with his head, but unfortunately bent it over Rönnow and into his own goal. They went into half-time with the score at 3:1

The second half began with a scare for the Munich side. Aleksander Pavlovic had to leave the pitch in the 49th minute with an injury. The midfielder was replaced by Leon Goretzka
The next setback for Bayern came in the 55th minute: Petersen awarded a penalty after Kane elbowed Jeong in the Munich penalty area. Querfeld stepped up again and again beat Neuer
In the middle of the second half, the two teams exchanged wild blows. While Union pushed for a 3:3, Bayern also had their chances. Rönnow was on hand to deny Kane in the 62nd and Diaz in the 74th. At the other end, Neuer saved a low shot from Schäfer in the 70th
The hosts threw everything forward in the closing stages and had a great chance to equalize in the 85th minute, but Querfeld’s header narrowly missed the left post
In the end, Bayern managed to hold on to the result and narrowly won 3:2
