Wilfried Nancy is en-route to Glasgow to become Celtic’s new permanent manager. The Frenchman emerged as Celtic’s preferred candidate to replace Brendan Rodgers with Paul Tisdale pushing hard for the appointment of the Columbus Crew boss.
Nancy faces a fairly daunting task in uniting the club but has been helped by the incredible interim spell of club legend Martin O’Neill. The Irishman has secured Celtic’s place in the Premier Sports Cup Final, won each game domestically and beat Feyenoord in De Kuip. However, Wednesday’s home game against Dundee will be O’Neill’s final game in the Celtic dugout after stepping in after Rodgers’ shock exit.
It has been reported by Record Sport that Nancy is on his way and is expected to be in attendance at Paradise for the visit of Steven Pressley’s side. It has been three weeks since Nancy’s MLS season concluded and it has been speculated that while the deal to bring him to Paradise has been concluded, he has been working at assessing the squad and identifying potential targets for the January window.
The Herald are reporting that Nancy will take charge of Celtic’s training on Thursday after the Dundee game with the focus switching to the top of the table clash with Hearts. If Celtic can put Dundee to the sword, they could return to the top of the table with a victory over Derek McInnes’ side on Sunday.
There is a degree of trepidation given the upheaval in the dugout after MON, Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham restored harmony in the squad after a slow start to the season. It remains to be seen whether the trio will be involved beyond Wednesday evening. They all deserve enormous credit for stepping in and helping to stabilise the side and reinvigorate the season. There could be merit in both coaches remaining with MON stepping into a role on the Celtic Board. Nancy is expected to have a Scottish coach with a Celtic connection on his backroom staff and it may be that Fozzy and Maloney remain, even if MON is to depart.
