FC Bayern are still on the lookout for reinforcements for the right side of defence. The search for a new right-back is one of the central tasks in the squad planning for the coming summer. Now a surprising name has emerged: according to media reports, Munich are looking at Trent Alexander-Arnold from Real Madrid

It has long been no secret that Bayern see a need for action in this position. Recent weeks have clearly revealed the personnel bottlenecks, in addition to the unclear future of Sacha Boey. Feyenoord’s Givairo Read was recently considered a concrete candidate, but now Alexander-Arnold, a much more prominent caliber, is being linked with the record champions

The England international moved from Liverpool FC to Real Madrid in the summer of 2025 for a comparatively low ten million euros – a transfer that has hardly borne any sporting fruit so far. Alexander-Arnold is struggling with persistent injury problems in his first season with the Whites. At the beginning of December, he suffered a muscle injury in the league match against Athletic Bilbao and has been out of action ever since. He had already been slowed down by a thigh injury that put him out of action after just a few minutes at the start of the season. The 27-year-old has only made eleven appearances in all competitions so far

In addition to the physical setbacks, there are also sporting reservations. In Madrid, Alexander-Arnold is repeatedly accused of being defensively fragile, while his offensive influence – once his great strength – has so far fallen short of expectations. Not an ideal environment for a player who was considered one of the best full-backs in the world at Liverpool for years

As the British Telegraph reports, Alexander-Arnold is said to be increasingly dissatisfied with his situation at Real. According to the report, the Englishman is already thinking about leaving after the 2026 World Cup – also because he was apparently made promises during the negotiations that have not yet been fulfilled. According to the Spanish portal Fichajes, he is even considering a return to the Premier League, with Newcastle United considered a serious prospect

Expensive, complicated, risky

Interesting from Bayern’s point of view: A move to Munich is also said to be conceivable for Alexander-Arnold. It would not be the first time that his name has been traded at Säbener Straße. His sporting CV speaks for itself – two-time English champion, Champions League winner, 34-time international. The Englishman undoubtedly has experience at the highest level

But this is where the doubts begin. Alexander-Arnold is still under contract with Real until 2031 and has a market value of around 70 million euros. Added to this is a rumoured annual salary of around 30 million euros – a figure that would hardly be feasible at FC Bayern. Even with significant cutbacks, the deal would represent an enormous risk, both financially and in sporting terms

Against this backdrop, a transfer seems rather unlikely. Munich will want to solve their right-back problem, but whether they will sign an injury-prone Real star on an extremely high salary is open to question.
