Vincent Kompany is relying much more heavily on rotation at FC Bayern this season. In the 2-1 away win against SV Elversberg, the Belgian gave several key players a rest and redistributed playing time within his squad.

Manuel Neuer, Joshua Kimmich, Luis Díaz, and Jamal Musiala started on the bench. Jonas Urbig got the start in goal instead. Kompany also made several substitutions during the game, trying to involve as many players as possible.

This is by no means a coincidence. The Bayern coach is following a specific plan. On the one hand, he wants to manage the workload of his top stars; on the other hand, he wants the players from the second string to get enough playing time so they can step in immediately when it counts.

The lessons learned from last season are likely to play a role here.

“It’s not about giving the players handouts.”

After the victory in Elversberg, Kompany explained in detail the reasoning behind his player rotation policy. “There’s a logic to it. Sometimes gut feeling also plays a role in such decisions. Overall, we have to give the guys playing time so they’re ready when the moment comes. If they just sit on the sidelines all season and then something happens, it would be too late. That’s part of soccer. It’s important that there’s a logic behind it—it’s not about giving the players handouts.”

With this, the 40-year-old makes it clear: playing time shouldn’t simply be handed out to keep morale high in the squad. Rather, Kompany wants to ensure that, as the season progresses, he can rely on as many players as possible who are in rhythm.

Especially given the demands of the Bundesliga, the DFB Cup, and the Champions League, this could prove decisive.

Bayern wants to be ready for the decisive phase

The Munich team learned firsthand last season just how important a strong bench is. During the decisive phase of the Champions League, Kompany’s options were severely limited.

The Bayern coach was particularly short on alternatives in the semifinal against Paris Saint-Germain. At the same time, several key players had been forced to play a lot in the weeks leading up to that match because Kompany had virtually no options for rotation due to the team’s personnel situation.

This scenario should ideally not be repeated. That’s why the Bayern coach is trying early in the season to involve his entire roster while also managing the workload of his key players.

Kompany is consciously accepting that this means not every lineup will be based solely on performance in the immediately preceding game. For him, the big picture is what matters.

The message to his team is therefore clear: Every player is needed. Those who are initially behind the starters shouldn’t sit on the bench for months and then suddenly be expected to perform in a decisive Champions League match.

Kompany wants to build up his roster options early this time around. The rotation in Elversberg was therefore not just a reaction to the strain of the past few days—but part of a long-term plan for Bayern.
