Diario AS reports that Villarreal defender Willy Kambwala is set to join Serie A side Como on a season-long loan.

The French-Congolese centre-back opted for Italy over a proposed switch to Osasuna as he searches for regular first-team football. A late push from Como persuaded him to change course.

Under Iñigo Pérez at Villarreal he had slipped to fifth-choice centre-back, prompting the move for minutes.

Como will cover his full salary and the amortisation of his transfer fee, estimated at about €1 million. The deal includes a non-mandatory purchase option worth €10 million.

Kambwala joined Villarreal from Manchester United for a fixed €5 million plus add-ons and was seen as a long-term project. His progress stalled last season after a severe left hamstring tear limited him to just two appearances in the 2025-26 campaign.

Earlier in his career he endured a 11-month layoff soon after leaving Sochaux for United in October 2020. He later made his senior Premier League debut under Erik ten Hag against West Ham United and remains highly rated.
