“Winner players, winner mentalities” – Maresca on why his team can’t relax against weakened Liverpool

Enzo Maresca has just spoken to Sky Sports ahead of kick off of Chelsea’s massive game against Liverpool in the Premier League.

Teams around them have dropped points – including Newcastle, who just drew 1-1 with Brighton. That amps up the pressure on his team, but also increases the opportunity we have to make an impact in the table with 3 points.

“We have to try to manage the emotions. We have 4 games to go and we have to try to win as many as we can. And then at the end we’ll see where we are,” he told Patrick Davison ahead of kick off when asked how he was telling his team to cope with the pressure.

“When you win games it helps a lot [with momentum], we won the last 2 in a row, and if we want to finish top 5 we have to win games, so hopefully we can win today,” the Chelsea boss concluded.

Maresca not expecting Liverpool to step off the gas

Maresca insisted that he’s not expecting the Reds are going to ease off just because they’ve won the title. They’ve changed their side a little, but it’s certainly not a weakened team:

“When you have winner players, winner mentality like they have, I don’t think they’re going to drop. So I think we should expect a tough game,” the former Leicester coach said.

He also spoke a little about having Romeo Lavia back in the team, allowing Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez to play slightly different roles:

“Unfortunately for us this season we haven’t been able to use them together many times because of different kinds of injury, different kinds of situations. Now Romeo is back and hopefully he can keep growing and give us balance.”
