Wirtz rejection a stroke of luck for Bayern? This is what Max Eberl thinks

FC Bayern’s transfer plans last summer are still being discussed months later. The missed signing of Florian Wirtz in particular is being re-evaluated time and time again. Now sporting director Max Eberl has taken a clear stance.

The summer of 2025 was dominated by one name in Munich: Florian Wirtz. The attacking player ultimately decided against the record champions and in favor of a move to Liverpool FC in the Premier League – a setback that had long-lasting internal repercussions.

In an interview with BILD, Max Eberl was confronted with the theory that, in hindsight, he was happy about the rejection because it had cleared the way for Luis Díaz. However, the sporting director disagreed: „Frankly, I would say: wrong. We would have been very happy if Florian Wirtz had opted for FC Bayern.“

The sporting director added: „He opted for the Premier League. And we are very happy that we made another excellent decision with the signing of Luis Díaz.“

Wirtz would also have blocked Karl’s path

Díaz has quickly established himself in Munich and is already a permanent fixture in the attack. In 25 competitive matches, the 29-year-old has already scored 14 goals and provided eleven assists. He also impresses time and again with his commitment and defensive qualities. Eberl expressly sees the decision to sign the Colombian as a success in its own right – not merely as a consequence of the failed Wirtz deal.

In addition to the external transfer, however, the rejection also had internal repercussions. Without a top-class new signing for the attacking gaps, windows of opportunity opened up for young players. Lennart Karl in particular benefited from this and gained important minutes early on in precisely those positions that a Wirtz would also have claimed.

This is one of the reasons why Wirtz is now viewed more soberly at Säbener Straße. Although the international has recently got into his stride at Liverpool FC, he is not really missed in Munich, thanks to Díaz’s performances and the increased role of the club’s own talents in the current squad.
