On Monday afternoon, Wisła Kraków announced the appointment of Jerzy Brzęczek as their new head coach. He has signed a contract at Reymonta 22 lasting until the end of the season, with an option to extend.

Brzęczek replaces Slovak coach Adrian Guľa, who was dismissed from the position on Sunday evening.

Brzęczek arrives in Kraków having previously coached both Wisła Płock and Lechia Gdańsk in the Ekstraklasa. The job is the coach’s first since being dismissed as coach of the Polish national team at the end of 2020, despite having led them to the delayed Euro 2020 tournament.

As a player, Brzęczek captained the Polish national team, and also played for Górnik Zabrze and Lech Poznań in Poland, and Maccabi Haifa, LASK Linz, Sturm Graz and Tirol Innsbruck abroad.

Brzęczek is also the uncle of Wisła star/owner Jakub Błaszczykowski, and the club’s president Dawid Błaszczykowski.

13-time Polish champions Wisła currently sit 13th in the Ekstraklasa, with 21 points from 21 games. Brzęczek will lead the team for the first time next Monday (21st February), in the crucial clash with relegation rivals Górnik Łęczna.
