Joining just a few weeks before, fellow Germany international Malick Thiaw has been a similar level instant hit.
The defender seeing his Newcastle United form propel him back into the Germany squad after an absence of more than two years.
Now Malick Thiaw telling the media in Germany all the benefits coming from Nick Woltemade joining him at St James’ Park.
“That’s great.
“I think he would say the same but he has really helped me.
“It is always different when you share that comfort zone with another German. Someone you can always speak German with and whose interests you share. He’s become a very good friend of mine.
“I’m very happy he’s here and he is a great asset to the team.”
Malick Thiaw on how Nick Woltemade complements the Newcastle United team with his qualities:
“Nick’s qualities are undisputed.
“Everyone is aware of that.
“I already knew Nick before, so I was aware of what he brings to the table and that he could definitely make it in England.
“The fact that he then got off to such a perfect start was perfect.
“He is doing very well.”
Malick Thiaw on being back with the national team and how he reacted to the call from the national coach:
“I was very happy and grateful to be back. Being able to play for Germany in Germany is always an honour for me. I am very happy and will try to give my best.”
Malick Thiaw on his development since his time at Schalke 04 :
“It was a huge step for me to move from Schalke to Milan. I learned an incredible amount – both on and off the pitch. How to play, how to prepare mentally, and how to handle pressure. But also the experience I gained, whether in big games or against big opponents. Nobody can take that away from me.”
Malick Thiaw on whether he had given it any thought when he was last not called up to the national team:
“Of course. I’ve always played at a good level. That’s why you always hope to be nominated. That hasn’t been the case recently. Nevertheless, I’ve always tried to give my best. Therefore, I’m all the happier to be able to play for Germany again.”
“I’m aware that I haven’t been with the DFB for almost two years now. Therefore, I know that I’m not coming here as an undisputed starter. I have to prove myself and hope that I get playing time so that I can meet the coach’s expectations.”
Malick Thiaw on why, despite his triple citizenship (Germany, Senegal, Finland), he ultimately chose Germany:
“My priority has always been to play for Germany. However, I also listened to the plans of Senegal and Finland. Since I haven’t been with the DFB for two years, I’ve maintained contact with the other two nations. However, I made it clear from the beginning that Germany is always my priority and that if I received a call from there, I would gladly play for Germany.”
