In a high-scoring and thrilling encounter at the Volkswagen Arena, VfL Wolfsburg convincingly saw off Manchester United, beating them 5-2 in their UEFA Women’s Champions League encounter.
United started well and had gone ahead early in the game, but Wolfsburg’s clinical finishing and resolute nature eventually shaped the game to their advantage. The result was a massive statement from Wolfsburg in their push to the top spots in the table, as United need to go back to the drawing board following costly defensive lapses.
United showed early intent from the first whistle. They broke the deadlock in the 14th minute through Fridolina Rolfö, who tapped home a well-delivered cross to give the visitors an ideal start.
Wolfsburg responded quickly, though. Just three minutes after, Ella Peddemors capitalised on a loose clearance to drive the ball into the net to level the score.
She struck again in the 37-minute mark, this time from long range, giving Wolfsburg the lead for the first time in the match.
Approaching half-time, Wolfsburg continued to press and in first-half stoppage time, Lineth Beerensteyn curled in a stunning effort from about 25 yards which into the top corner, making it 3-1.
But United weren’t done yet before the break. Right at the end of the half’s added time, Melvine Malard managed to pull one back for United to make it 3-2 and set up a second period with all to play for.
Alas, Wolfsburg continued their dominance into the second half as if Malard’s goal had never gone in. United made early substitutions as they aimed to get back into the game: on came Jess Park and Leah Galton.
Wolfsburg doubled their advantage in the 65th minute mark as Beerensteyn struck again, rising to glance a header past the keeper after some sustained pressure was applied inside the box.
From that point, United struggled to regain their rhythm. They conceded possession too easily, and the Wolfsburg attack remained dangerous on the break.
Despite United’s energetic start to the game, their defensive frailties were exposed time and again. In stoppage time, substitute Vivien Endemann wrapped up the scoring for Wolfsburg, finishing off a move to make it 5-2 and seal a dominant home victory.
