Wolfsburg have sacked head coach Daniel Bauer after a 1-2 home defeat by Hamburg left them second bottom of the Bundesliga.

The 43-year-old was dismissed the morning after the loss. Sporting director Pirmin Schwegler said the decision was difficult, that they had hoped to turn things around together, and that a new impulse was needed to secure survival.

Saturday's reverse was their third consecutive league defeat and their 15th in 25 matches this season. The club carry one of the biggest wage bills in the division.

Bauer has been on Wolfsburg's staff since 2016, starting in the academy. He took interim charge in November, then was confirmed as permanent head coach a month later after early positive results.

A successor will be named in the coming days.
