Manchester United returned to winning ways in the Premier League with a comfortable 4-1 victory at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday.
They almost opened the scoring through an in-swinging corner that looked goal-bound, but goalkeeper Sam Johnstone punched it off his line.
Diogo Dalot then missed the game’s first big chance, but was denied by Johnstone. Moments later, the goalie made another good save to keep out Bryan Mbeumo’s volley.
United drew first blood in the 25th minute, with Fernandes squeezing the ball past Johnstone – his first goal since September.
The visitors were close to getting a second goal when Fernandes slipped in Mbeumo, but his shot was saved. Toti then made a goalline clearance to deny Matheus Cunha’s rebound.
Wolves gathered some momentum before the break and drew level when Jean-Ricner Bellegarde smashed David Moller Wolfe’s pass into the net.
Man United quickly regained control of proceedings after the interval. Mbeumo restored their lead, putting the ball into the empty net after Fernandes played him through.
The strike was Mbeumo’s sixth league goal involvement against Wolves – his second-best tally against any opposition.
Fernandes was the provider again, clipping a ball over the top for Mason Mount to extend United’s lead.
The United captain has now scored and assisted in a league game 16 times — only Mohamed Salah (27) and Kevin De Bruyne (17) have done so more often since his Premier League debut.
The Portugal international capped off a brilliant display, scoring from the penalty spot after Yerson Mosquera committed a handball.
United have climbed to sixth in the standings, one point adrift of fourth-placed Crystal Palace.
