Wolves manager Rob Edwards says he left Middlesbrough mid-season because he did not want to regret missing out on his dream job later in life.

It came as something of a surprise that Edwards chose to depart Boro in the middle of a promotion challenge with the club second in the Championship and join a team rooted to the bottom of the Premier League.

Wolves are winless in the opening 11 games of the season and, with just two points to their name, look destined for the drop.

But the 42-year-old could not resist the call of a club he holds close to his heart. The former centre-back spent four years of his playing career at Molineux, making 111 appearances in gold. After retiring in 2013, he began his journey in management as the U18s coach at Wolves.

Speaking ahead of his first match in charge against Crystal Palace at home, Edwards said: “Feels amazing to be back. Really proud. Genuinely proud. I told staff and the players that.

“I will not lie, it has been an aim of mine since I got the U18’s job. It is something I’ve always wanted to do.”

Edwards received a massive wave of backlash for his decision from Boro fans, who feel left in the lurch, but he claims he has avoided looking at any of the reaction to his move.

“I didn’t see reaction but I was aware because some people told me,” he said.

“I don’t read about myself, listen to a thing. I’m not aware personally. I don’t ever want to know. That is just me.

“I know I was in a great job at Middlesbrough. Great people and very good players who have done well. So I’m aware of it. But this is something I have wanted to do for a very, very long time.

“I didn’t know if this opportunity would come up again for me to be the head coach of this club. I didn’t want to look back in 10, 15, 20 years time that I turned down chance to manage Wolves in the Premier League. That’s it. I didn’t want to regret that and here I am.

“I know scale of the task and I’m really enthused by it. This week has been really enjoyable. But now the games start so lets see.”
