Wolves complete deal for player who won major silverware before actually making his senior debut | OneFootball

Sean Neave, who has joined Wolves, was part of the Newcastle United squad that won the EFL Cup back in March 2025.

Wolves suffered their first defeat under Cesar Peixoto when they were beaten by West Ham on Tuesday night.

Despite that, it has been a positive start to life under the Portuguese head coach, who was surprisingly named as Rob Edwards’ successor in the summer.

As well as that, there had been plenty of uncertainty surrounding a host of Wolves players throughout the transfer window, so Peixoto will be relieved that it is now closed, which means he knows the group he is working with until January.

Even though Wolves have a squad packed with quality, there was a frustration among the support that the club didn’t do more to help the new boss, who had made it clear he wanted a winger and striker through the door going into the final stages of the window.

The club did manage to provide competition for Raul Jimenez and Adam Armstrong though, as they secured a loan deal for Sean Neave from Newcastle United.

The 19-year-old, who is highly-rated by the Magpies, was always expected to depart on a temporary basis, but it had been claimed that a move to League One was more likely.

So, the switch to Wolves came as a shock, but Neave will hope to get minutes under Peixoto as he looks to play his part in helping Wanderers back to the Premier League.

It’s safe to say that most Wolves fans won’t know about Neave’s career so far, as he has only made two senior appearances for Newcastle’s first-team, which amounts to around 16 minutes on the pitch in professional football.

The teenager, who was born in the north-east, has been with the club since he was a kid, and he has emerged as one of their top talents in the academy, scoring goals regularly in the U18 and U21 side.

That put him on the radar of Eddie Howe in recent years, and Neave was actually on the bench as Newcastle beat Liverpool to win the EFL Cup in March 2025.

Of course, that was a historic day for Newcastle, as they won their first bit of domestic silverware in 70 years, and it remarkably meant Neave picked up a winners' medal before he had ever played for the club!

His debut would come almost a year later, and it actually arrived in the Champions League, as he was a late sub in the 6-1 thrashing of Qarabağ in Azerbaijan.

The striker would then feature on the final day at Fulham, in what turned out to be Howe’s last game, and it was Neave’s first appearance in the Premier League.

Following on from that, there’s no getting away from the fact that this is a huge gamble from Wolves, as Neave is clearly untested in the professional game.

Whilst scoring goals hasn’t been a problem in the opening weeks, there is a lack of depth in the final third right now, as Rafiki Said is still some way from returning to fitness, and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde is also injured.

So, Adam Armstrong is seen as someone who is the first sub for the wide positions, which means there is no natural striker behind Jimenez at the moment.

As a result, fans were hoping for another proven striker, or a senior winger, to arrive before the deadline, but it didn’t materialise.

Nevertheless, the Wolves hierarchy must feel Neave can play a part, and he should be involved in the squad for Sunday’s derby game at Birmingham City.

Finally, this is a fantastic chance for Neave to show what he can do because, as outlined above, he should get a chance to feature regularly, even if it’s likely to be on the bench.

He will be joining up with a Wolves side that have scored 11 goals in four games, and, in the likes of Fer Lopez and Mateus Mane, they have two outstanding creative talents for this level.

That’s all any striker would want, and, given his record in youth football, Neave will back himself to take the chances that could come his way.

So, he will be excited for this challenge, and if Neave can contribute to a promotion with Wolves, it will continue a great few years for the youngster, who has a medal with Newcastle, along with appearances in the Champions League and Premier League.
