Wolves would be interested in Cardiff City's Brian Barry-Murphy if they sack Rob Edwards after his disastrous start in charge at Molineux.

Cardiff City boss Brian Barry-Murphy is on Wolves’ radar if the Premier League strugglers make the decision to sack Rob Edwards after his difficult start to life in charge at Molineux.

Edwards made the surprising decision to leave Middlesbrough for Wolves in November, and whilst he was inheriting a team in a desperate situation, Wanderers have lost seven games on the bounce under their former player, which means relegation is inevitable.

The Midlands outfit are 16 points from safety, and their only realistic goal is to beat Derby County’s 11 points to ensure they don’t become the worst team in Premier League history.

Instead, plans for next season and beyond are already poised to be undertaken as a return to the Championship beckons.

They state that Wolves have already drawn up a list of potential replacements, with Hearts chief Derek McInnes, former boss Gary O’Neil and Cardiff’s Barry-Murphy all options.

It’s no surprise that Barry-Murphy is attracting interest, as he has enjoyed a brilliant start to life with Cardiff since his appointment in the summer.

Not only has the former Man City youth coach got the team flying high at the top of the table, but the Bluebirds have played some stylish football, with a focus on bringing in youth players from the academy such as Ronan Kpakio and Dylan Lawlor.

Cardiff City will hope Brian Barry-Murphy is committed to their long-term project amid Wolves claim

Of course, it’s still early days for Barry-Murphy at Cardiff, but you can see why he would be on the radar of other clubs because of the way he has the team playing.

With chairman Jeff Shi leaving Wolves, it’s normal that there would be doubts over Edwards’ future, as the next man in charge may want to bring in his own manager, as Shi had been influential in bringing the ex-player back to Molineux.

Yet, this won’t overly worry Cardiff right now, as they only just appointed Barry-Murphy, and they will believe he is committed to the long-term project that was part of the reason why he joined in the first place.

It's something that the Irishman has already discussed throughout his tenure to date, and there's a school of thought that Cardiff's long-term future is rather exciting with a progressive and passionate head coach at the helm, a squad packed with young, homegrown, high-value talent and a united fanbase once more - the same cannot be said for Wolves, however.

Plus, there’s a very real chance that Cardiff and Wolves will be in the same division next season, and whilst parachute payments will give the Black Country side a financial advantage over many in the Championship, the reality is that whoever is in charge next season is going to have a massive job on their hands.

So, all at Cardiff will be confident that Barry-Murphy will stick around, and the fact he has been linked with other clubs shows he is doing something right.
