Wolverhampton Wanderers technical director Matt Jackson has admitted that they got their transfer business ‘wrong’ in the summer.
The club sold Matheus Cunha and Rayan Ait-Nouri to Manchester United and Manchester City for a combined £92.5 million last summer. Nelson Semedo left on a free transfer.
They signed Fer Lopez, Jhon Arias, David Moller Wolfe, Tolu Arokodare, Ladislav Krejci and Jackson Tchatchoua, but the moves have not worked out.
They currently sit at the bottom of the Premier League table after collecting just two points from 15 matches. Jackson admitted their mistakes in an interview with BBC Radio WM.
He said: “The players who were brought in were brought in for the right reasons.
“But when you have a return of two points at this stage, you have to say it’s wrong because whatever starting eleven we have put out has not been good enough.
“We have a great belief in those players developing. The ability and will to improve have been excellent – but you want immediate returns.
“For the way we can go into the market for our players, it’s tough. We don’t have endless resources, so we are trying to find players in markets where others aren’t necessarily looking.”
Relegation is looking almost inevitable for Wolves, who haven’t won in the Premier League since April.
They sacked manager Vitor Pereira in November and replaced him with Rob Edwards. The former Middlesbrough boss has lost all four of his matches in charge.
Unless Edwards inspires a massive comeback, Wolves are almost certain to suffer relegation to the Championship.
They will look to make some quality additions in the winter transfer window, but players will be reluctant to join a relegation battle.
