Of course, there are others in what looks to be a competitive Championship lineup next term but Wrexham, Millwall, and Wolverhampton Wanderers all look likely to be among a group of leading promotion contenders in the Championship next season, albeit for different reasons.

Wrexham's remarkable rise through the divisions has been fuelled by significant investment and ambition, giving them the resources to strengthen further and continue their upward trajectory. Millwall will also be encouraged after finishing third and narrowly missing out on promotion in the play-off semi-finals to Hull City.

Both have already proven they already possess a squad capable of competing at the top end of the table. Meanwhile, Wolves arrive as a recently relegated Premier League club with greater financial muscle than most of their rivals. Combined, all three clubs have strong foundations and realistic expectations of challenging for a place in the top eight, if not the automatic promotion spots.

But that is why they will all be eyeing similar targets in some positions, with a Sunderland ace already looking like being someone they are all in the mix for.

Anthony Patterson interest grows with Wrexham and Wolves joining the race

It's already been stated that Millwall and Hull City want Sunderland's Anthony Patterson, with the goalkeeper appearing 16 times for the Lions to end the 2025/26 season on loan from the Black Cats.

The 26-year-old has two years remaining on his contract at the Stadium of Light but has fallen down the pecking order due to the form of Robin Roefs since signing in the summer of 2025. Patterson has two promotions with Sunderland and was eyeing another with Millwall.

Coventry City, Derby County, Southampton, and West Brom have all been linked to Patterson since that 2-0 loss at the Den ended his season with Millwall. He kept seven clean sheets and conceded just 14 times in his 16 appearances.

Now, Keith Downie of Sky Sports has the latest on the goalkeeper's future, with other Championship sides chasing the £8 million-rated star. He believes Sunderland will listen to offers now that Melker Ellborg is established as Roefs' deputy.

Downie states that Wolves, Wrexham, and Millwall are amongst the Championship clubs keen on the 26-year-old and also that Scottish giants Rangers have explored a move but the £8 million price is described as prohibitive.

Anthony Patterson is vastly experienced in the Championship for his age

Patterson should be a goalkeeper of serious interest to ambitious Championship clubs that can afford his price tag. It's no surprise then, that the clubs who can are teams such as Wrexham, Millwall, and Wolves. The Lions have traded well in recent years to get to the point where they can spend serious cash on players.

Despite still being relatively young for a goalkeeper, Patterson already boasts considerable experience, having made 23 League One appearances and a further 154 in the Championship. That level of exposure in the second tier is difficult to find in a player who should still have many years ahead of him.

As mentioned, he has experience of promotion battles, play-off campaigns, and the demands of a long Championship season that would make him an attractive option for clubs targeting the Premier League. Patterson offers that blend of proven pedigree in this league and long-term potential as well.

It makes him a sensible recruitment target for sides seeking stability between the posts. That said, some teams may need to sell or move on players in their goalkeeping department before striking a deal for Patterson, which makes it unclear which club is leading the race right now.
