Wolves were denied what they thought was a winning goal against Liverpool in the FA Cup due to a controversial offside.
Toti believed he had won the tie, making it 3-2 inside the final 10 minutes of the match.
However after mad celebrations, they soon realised the assistant referee was flagging for offside.
Was there an offside in the build-up?
Well, replays didn’t appear very conclusive at all.
In fact, Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui was adamant the goal should have stood.
However, Mike Dean on the VAR disallowed the goal.
Why was it disallowed? Toti appeared onside.
Well, it’s actually because the corner taker, Matheus Nunes, was offside with the header being won by a Wolves player.
VAR couldn’t get the right camera angle for Nunes so they stuck with the onfield decision.
ITV says: “VAR had no definitive angle to overturn the decision.”
Replays did suggest that Nunes was, indeed, offside.
Well, that clears it up then.
To be fair to the assistant referee, he was in the best position to see if Nunes was offside and made, what appears to be, a good decision. And if VAR don’t have the evidence to overturn it, they simply can’t.
It saved Liverpool.
Despite Jurgen Klopp fielding a very strong XI – which included Cody Gakpo making his debut – they failed to beat an understrength Wolves side.
Wolves took the lead when Alisson produced an absolute shocker by passing the ball straight to Goncalo Guedes, who tapped the ball home.
However, just before half time, Darwin Nunez pulled Liverpool level with a brilliant side-footed volley from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s ball.
And it looked as though Liverpool would be heading through to the next round when Mohamed Salah put them 2-1 ahead. There was offside controversy in that goal too as Salah appeared offside when Gakpo appeared to find him.
However, because Toti attempted to play the ball, Salah was demmed onside.
But Wolves hauled themselves back level when Hwang Hee-chan forced the ball past Alisson to equalise.
Then came Toti’s controversial winner which was eventually ruled out by VAR.
