Rob Edwards is now the front-runner to become the new manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Wolves are set to make an official approach to Middlesbrough for the 42-year-old, according to the Telegraph,
The club dismissed Vitor Pereira last week after failing to win any of their 10 Premier League games this season.
They were in advanced negotiations with Gary O’Neil to return to the Midlands for a second spell.
However, the Englishman had a change of heart and withdrew from the race.
Edwards is now their number one target to replace Pereira, but Middlesbrough are reluctant to lose him.
The former Luton Town boss joined Boro this summer and has made an impressive start to life at the club.
His team are third in the Championship table after collecting 26 points from 14 matches.
Edwards, who has previously worked as a coach at Wolves’ academy, is highly regarded by executive chairman Jeff Shi.
Wolves will have to pay compensation to Middlesbrough if they persuade Edwards to join them.
The Midlands side face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge this weekend. Youth team coaches James Collins and Richard Walker will be in charge of the team.
