Despite finishing bottom of the Premier League, the Old Gold have been busy preparing a Championship super squad, with Kieran Trippier and Raul Jimenez signing for the club.

Rob Edwards seemingly played an integral part in those transfers as the Black Country club were fast becoming everyone's favourites to lift the second-tier title next term.

However, Wolves supporters are waking up to the strangest of news, as the man they thought was brought in to guide the club back to the top tier has been sacked.

Now, the alarming details of how Edwards discovered his sacking have emerged.

Yesterday afternoon, leftfield news broke that Wolves were considering Gil Vicente boss César Peixoto as their new manager to replace Edwards.

The report came out of nowhere and felt like a bizarre one given that the club are well-prepared for next season with Edwards involved in transfer activity.

However, in the early hours of the morning, Fabrizio Romano revealed that the Old Gold have agreed a deal in principle to appoint Peixoto, with a verbal agreement in place.

It has since been reported that Edwards has been sacked, but now the shocking truth of how he found out about the news has been revealed.

The 43-year-old first heard of his sacking after a member of his family saw rumours of Peixoto's appointment on social media, and Edwards called the club to ask about the rumours, according to Peter O'Rourke.

O'Rourke adds that in a phone call to club officials, it was confirmed to Edwards he had been sacked despite playing a role in the club’s first two signings of the summer in Trippier and Jimenez, and also the new contract for Andre.

Clearly, the news was as much of a surprise to him and his family as it was to the wider football community, as his successor's appointment was announced before his sacking.

In his native Portugal, the 46-year-old is regarded as an ambitious, modern manager who has consistently worked with clubs on modest budgets.

Reports suggest that the Old Gold were impressed with the job he did at Gil Vicente, who finished sixth in Liga Portugal, significantly overachieving on minimal resources.

His preferred formation is a 4-2-3-1 built on a sturdy defensive structure with quick transitions into attack, while he likes to develop young players.

Wolves have a track record of appointing Portuguese managers due to the club's close connection with super-agent Jorge Mendes and his agency Gestifute.
