Yerson Mosquera could be out of action for some time after suffering an injury against Blackburn Rovers

Wolverhampton Wanderers head coach, Cesar Peixoto, could be without the services of Colombian centre-back, Yerson Mosquera, for a lengthy period.

The extent of his injury, as well as the nature of it, is yet to be revealed, after it was sustained in the 2-2 draw against Blackburn Rovers at Molineux last Friday.

Wolves are hoping to mount a first-time bid for promotion back to the Premier League under their newly-appointed Portuguese head coach in what is their first campaign at Championship level for eight years, but they certainly were far from convincing against Tony Mowbray's side in the divisional curtain-raiser.

Despite Marshall Munetsi's early opener, the likes of Mosquera and his defensive colleagues struggled against Blackburn's dynamic attack before goals from Sean McLoughlin and Andri Gudjohnsen turned the game on its head either side of the half-time interval.

However, Wolves' first point of the season was rescued by returning Mexican cult hero, Raul Jimenez, who netted a 93rd-minute penalty after Ryan Alebiosu was adjudged to have handled inside the box.

Next up for the West Midlands outfit is an away trip to fellow Lancashire side, Preston North End, at Deepdale, although it now remains to be seen how Peixoto shuffles what was a stretched defence against Rovers due to Mosquera's unfortunate circumstances.

As per Johnny Phillips - via the Wanderers Post - it has been claimed that there are concerns within the Wolves camp that Mosquera, 25, could be set for a lengthy spell on the treatment table after pulling up in the final minutes of the draw with Blackburn.

Peixoto had already utilised all five of his substitutes well in advance, before, in an attempt to salvage a point from an extremely frustrating introduction to the Championship, the defender had spent a period of time as a makeshift centre-forward despite struggling to move.

Moments later, Mosquera was to receive treatment from medical staff on the sideline next to the dugouts, before being deemed unfit to continue, meaning Wolves would go on to draw the match a man light.

However, the nature of the injury, which is also yet to be revealed, leaves Peixoto rather stretched, after it was reported that Ladislav Krejci's omission from the squad was also due to fitness, albeit the Czechia international continues to attract transfer interest.

Mosquera signed for Wolves in 2021 for £4.5m from Atlético Nacional, and has endured a rather tough period since breaking into the first-team fold on a regular basis two seasons ago.

Naturally, this injury news has sparked intriguing reactions from supporters of the Old Gold and Black, with one stating: "Quite simple then really, we don’t sell Krejci and Santi Bueno."

Another said: "Feel sorry for the lad but him and Toti are just not good enough, so it’s the perfect time to replace him. His constant rolling around holding his face is also really annoying."

"Gutting new(s), was really expecting a full season next to Trippier to help level out his consistency and Rash nature, hopefully it isn't too serious," one Wolves fan wrote, hoping that Mosquera would turn his fortunes around.

"To be frank Mosquera is not a quality CB. Yes he gives 100% but technically he is lacking. We need more composure and someone who can deliver a pass without making a howler. Having said that I wish him well," was another verdict, hinting that Wanderers perhaps need to add further depth, quality and experience before September 1st in defensive areas.

There is no doubt that Mosquera would have wanted to use this season as a catalyst to revitalise his Wolves spell, even after a somewhat concerning defensive display from himself and his teammates against Blackburn.

However, it appears as though that chance could bypass him, which only increases the urgency for the club's hierarchy to back Peixoto with funds between now and September 1st to pack out his squad ahead of the remainder of the gruelling campaign, as only three signings have been made beyond the obligatory permanent deal for Krejci, with two of those being on free transfers in the form of Trippier and Jimenez.
