Sunday’s opening act sees two sides at opposite ends of the Premier League table go head-to-head as bottom-of-the-pile Wolves host reigning champions Manchester City, who head into the weekend just one point off of the top.

Gary O’Neil’s Wanderers have taken just one point from their opening seven league matches — their worst start to a campaign since 2004 — and they head into this encounter following five consecutive defeats.

City, meanwhile, are yet to lose in any competition this season and have won three of their last four matches across league and cup obligations. However, the Citizens have kept just one clean sheet in the Premier League, against Chelsea on the opening day of the campaign.

Wolves vs Man City: Room for improvement for both clubs

While the fortunes of Wolves and Manchester City differ drastically, Gary O’Neil and Pep Guardiola will both feel that there are positives to take and fine-tuning required to get the best out of their respective squads.

Wolves have lost seven of their nine matches in all competitions this season and conceded more goals than any other side in the top tier.

However, they have shown their qualities in front of goal in recent weeks, scoring a total of eight times in their last five matches, while forward Matheus Cunha has notched three times in the Premier League this term.

City, on the other hand, are having few issues in front of goal, with no side scoring more times in the league than their tally of 17 this campaign. Erling Haaland has grabbed 10 of those strikes.

While they continue to be deadly in attack, City’s defence has been far less impressive with their only league clean sheet coming in their season-opener away to Chelsea and the holes at the back may well need to be plugged if City are to retain their champion status.

O’Neil was handed a fresh injury blow over the international break as striker Hwang Hee-chan picked up an ankle issue while representing South Korea in their 2026 World Cup qualifier against Jordan. He joins Sasa Kalajdzic, Yerson Mosquera, Boubacar Traore and Enzo Gonzalez in the treatment room, while defender Craig Dawson is also a doubt as he recovers from illness.

Guardiola confirmed in his press conference on Friday that Kevin De Bruyne will not feature on Sunday and he joins injury-hit duo Rodri and Oscar Bobb on the sidelines.

Defender Nathan Ake faces a late fitness test, but Manuel Akanji is back to full fitness after recovering from a knock and is expected to start.
