Manchester City will be hoping to get off to a winning start in the 2025-26 Premier League when they travel to Molineux to face Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday 16th August at 5:30pm. Pep Guardiola’s side finished third in the Premier League last season but underwhelmed, while Wolves ended the campaign 16th. This game will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Premier League.
Wolves have lost nine of their last 10 Premier League meetings with Manchester City, and after losing key players in the summer, such as Cunha, Ait-Nouri and Semedo, they may struggle this season.
City have the individual quality to win this game, and they collected more points in the second half of last season than any other team. Only two of Pep Guardiola’s side’s 19 away matches last season featured five or more goals, and backing them to get off to a winning start this term looks a solid wager.
Tijjani Reijnders bagged a brace in his last pre-season game for City, the Dutch midfielder has a eye for goal and looks a little overpriced to score on his Premier League debut on Saturday. The 27-year-old scored an impressive 15 goals across all competitions last season for AC Milan, a figure that could well rise if City get back to their best under Guardiola.
Wolves are embarking on their first full season under Vitor Pereira’s tutelage. The Portuguese manager came in through the middle of the 2024-25 season with Wolves struggling. They had some more low periods with Pereira in charge, but ultimately improved to finish 17 points clear of the relegation zone. Now it’s all about how Wolves can build on those foundations.
Wolves were one of the worst home teams in the Premier League last season, losing 10 of their 19 games at Molineux. They also won six and drew three. But three of those wins came in their final five home games of the season, with Wolves taking 10 points from a possible 15.
Man City underwhelmed as defending Premier League champions in 2024-25. They had to settle for a third-placed finish, bringing their four-year domination of England’s top flight to an end. The Citizens also ended the season without a trophy for the first time since 2016-17, not including the Community Shield. Man City lost in the FA Cup final and bowed out of the Club World Cup in the last-16.
Man City were the fourth-best away team in the Premier League last season. But they still lost six games on the road. That included a run of five without victory from November to December, with Man City taking just one point from a possible 15. But they ended the campaign unbeaten in four on the road, winning two and drawing too. All without conceding.
Wolves will hope to have Sasa Kalajdzic available, but Yerson Mosquera and Leon Chiwone won’t be ready to return.
Rayan Cherki will be hoping to make his Premier League debut for Man City, having featured at the Club World Cup in the summer. Rodri remains out injured, along with Josko Gvardiol.
Man City have won nine of their past 10 Premier League games against Wolves. The only exception was a 2-1 defeat at Molineux in September 2023.
