Dan McNamara says he almost quit Wolves Women last summer after the licence row, as Wolves Studios releases a documentary.
According to ExpressAndStar.com, Wolves took their second-tier push to the final day but lost to Nottingham Forest, then learned former chairman Jeff Shi had not submitted a Tier 2 licence, making promotion impossible. The film, Wolves Women: Old Gold, New Dawn, explores the fallout.
McNamara called the episode one of his most devastating, saying he was in tears on hearing the bid was missing. He likened the rebuild to restoring a burned house and said senior players’ buy-in reignited momentum.
He admitted he nearly walked away, having interviews and offers elsewhere, but none stirred him like Wolves.
Player and Wolves season ticket holder Beth Merrick, a vocal critic in 2025, recalls a subdued dressing room on the final day and feeling they had played under a false pretence.
The film also features captain Anna Morphet, technical director Matt Jackson and Wolves Women chair Jenny Wilkes, and charts how the club have tried to learn and respond this season. Jackson says the latest application was significant after last year and that relationships have strengthened with full backing.
Wolves enter the final day later this month and could win the title if Burnley slip. A WSL expansion adds a one-off play-off for the runners-up, offering another route to promotion.
Directed by Jack Otter and driven by broadcaster and advisory board member Lynsey Hooper, the documentary is available on Wolves TV and YouTube.
