Rob Edwards faces a baptism of fire in his first away game as Wolves boss, travelling to face a rampant Aston Villa in the West Midlands derby.

The new head coach began his tenure with a defeat to Crystal Palace last weekend. Now, he must try to inspire a team that is winless in 12 Premier League games this season.

Wolves are in desperate trouble, sitting nine points from safety with the worst start to a season in the club’s Premier League history. However, Edwards, a former player at both clubs, knows the importance of this fixture. A shock result against their high-flying rivals could be the spark needed to ignite their survival bid.

Wolves team news

Rob Edwards has confirmed a significant defensive absence for Sunday’s West Midlands derby. Specifically, defender Matt Doherty will likely miss the match against Aston Villa. Although the Irishman returned to training this week, Edwards admitted the game will “probably come too soon” for him. Given the upcoming midweek fixture against Nottingham Forest, the club will likely take a cautious approach with his recovery.

Edwards also revealed that the squad is managing a few minor knocks. He attributed these issues to a recent increase in training intensity as he implements his new methods. However, aside from these minor concerns, Dan Bentley (ankle) and Rodrigo Gomes (groin) remain the only confirmed absentees.
