Women's Championship setting up for thrilling finale

The Women's Championship title race is hotting up with London City Lionesses taking top spot after recording an important win on Newcastle United that could set up an epic final day of the season.

Isobel Goodwin opened the scoring for the London side within the three minutes at Kingston Park Stadium in Newcastle before Beth Lumsden levelled things with just over a half hour gone. But Jocelyn Prêcheur's team claimed the win thanks to Sofia Jakobsson who scored the winner just before half-time.

The 34-year-old Swede is a great example of the top level quality that London City Lionesses possess thanks to their investment from businesswoman Michele Kang. Jakobsson has had stints with Chelsea, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and San Diego Wave as well as making over 150 appearances for her country to bring some real star power to the English second tier.

That win against the Magpies put the ambitious club at the top of the table, two points ahead of Birmingham City – the team they will play away on the final day of the season.

Charlton Athletic and Durham had threatened to challenge for a spot at the top of the table earlier in the season but have now fallen behind the top two.

With the international break upon us, the Championship will return with the pair having just three games left to play and two points between them.

Birmingham City have the more difficult final two games before a potential final-day clash: at home to fourth-placed Durham and then a trip to face Newcastle United. Any mistake from Amy Merricks' side will likely concede the title to their opponents on the final day.

Should they win both of those ties, they will be facing a team for the title that they have already defeated this season when Gemma Lawley and Neve Herron scored in a 2-1 win, with Georgia Brougham pulling one back late on for the Lionesses.

The London side are simply three wins away from the title and a spot in the WSL with a trip to Southampton, the visit of Durham, and then the final game to play. The game against Durham – the only other independent women's side in the division – being the most likely banana skin.

While Birmingham City could struggle if they go up without sufficient investment, just like Bristol City and Crystal Palace before them in recent seasons, it would be fascinating to see how the London City Lionesses will seek to compete on level terms with the best teams in the country.

Of course, they may need to use all that experience and star power at their disposal to ensure they get to that spot in the first place.
