The dates of the Women’s League Cup semi-finals have now been confirmed, with Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United all set to compete.
Both semi-finals will take place on Wednesday 21st January at 7pm. Arsenal will host United at Meadow Park, whilst City will host Chelsea at the Joie Stadium.
The four semi-finalists are also the top four in the Women’s Super League. The one-legged ties are sure to be competitive affairs, with each side aiming to claim silverware this season.
Arsenal, Chelsea and United all skipped the group stage, due to their participation in the UEFA Women’s Champions League. They instead entered the competition at the quarter-final stage.
Arsenal overcame Crystal Palace 2-0 in the quarter-finals to set up their tie with United. On their part, Marc Skinner’s side defeated Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 to reach the semi-finals.
When Arsenal and United met earlier this season, the result was a goalless draw. However, with home advantage for this tie, Renee Slegers’ will have their eyes set on the final. The Gunners won the League Cup in both 2023 and 2024, but were knocked out by City in last year’s semi-finals.
Meanwhile, Chelsea demolished Liverpool 9-1 in their quarter-final. Sonia Bompastor’s side have won the WSL six times in a row. However, they currently find themselves in the unfamiliar position of 2nd, trailing City by six points.
City, who missed out on European qualification last year, were not exempt from the League Cup group stage. Despite this, they comfortably cruised through, topping Group A, before thrashing West Ham 5-1 in the last eight.
They will now host Chelsea in the semi-finals, a face-off between 1st and 2nd in the WSL and a repeat of last year’s final. Chelsea claimed the trophy last season, winning 2-1 in the final against a City side who now have the chance for revenge.
