Day four at the 2019 Women’s World Cup produced just one goal but both matches still provided plenty of intrigue.

Here’s what went down …

Argentina earned their first ever World Cup point with a backs-to-the-wall performance against one of the tournament favourites, Japan, in Paris.

The game yielded few clear cut chances with Japan’s Yui Hasegawa going closest to scoring in what ended up being the 2019 tournament’s first goalless draw.

But the final whistle was greeted with wild celebrations by the Argentine players and staff.

Carlos Borello’s team had lost their previous six World Cup fixtures and went into the tournament as 500-1 outsiders to lift the trophy.

That result leaves England top of Group D.

Player of the match: Estefanía Banini (Argentina)

La Albiceleste’s captain and number 10 stole the show with some lovely touches, particularly this one.

In the second and final match of the day, Kadeisha Buchanan’s towering header on the stroke of half-time was enough to give Canada a slender victory over Cameroon.

But though the scoreline may suggest it was a close run thing, the result was no less than Kenneth Heiner-Møller’s players deserved as they dominated against a Cameroon side who failed to muster a single shot on target.

Player of the match: Jessie Fleming (Canada)

The 21-year-old – winning her 66th cap – really stood out from the crowd with a lively display.
