Athletic reached half-time at Cornellà incredulous, stuck at 0-0 after the woodwork intervened twice in a pivotal European race fixture.
According to El Correo, the visitors produced an intense opening period, creating chances and enjoying spells of control despite seven changes to the starting XI.
The first major chance arrived on 38 minutes. Ruiz de Galarreta released Williams, whose forced corner led to a near-post flick from Unai Gómez, then chaos as Urko González de Zárate's attempted clearance towards his own goal ricocheted off Aymeric Laporte's back and smacked the crossbar. Williams tried to seize the rebound but could not connect.
In stoppage time, Gómez again threatened, cushioning a fine touch in the area before shooting, only for Leandro Cabrera to intervene decisively. The deflection clipped Marko Dmitrovic's post and again denied the visitors.
Both scares preserved parity at the interval after a half Athletic shaded. The breakthrough remained elusive despite their pressure.
