World Cup 2026 Golden Boot – Main contenders

Harry Kane – England

England captain Harry Kane won the Golden Boot in 2018 and is the bookmakers’ favourite to finish on top of the goalscoring charts this summer.

The Bayern Munich striker has scored eight goals in 11 World Cup games and will fancy his chances of adding to his tally during the group stage.

The Three Lions have been drawn alongside Croatia, Ghana and Panama in the group stage, which gives Kane the opportunity to make a good start.

However, England’s penchant for struggling against higher-ranked opponents in major tournaments could scupper Kane’s hopes of winning the Golden Boot.

Kylian Mbappe – France

Kylian Mbappe claimed the top scorer prize at Qatar 2022, but his efforts were not quite enough to lead France to their third World Cup title.

Mbappe has continued to score for fun since then, averaging almost a goal per game for Real Madrid following his free transfer move from Paris Saint-Germain.

France will face Senegal, Norway and the inter-confederation play-off Path 2 winner in the group stage, which is a relatively favourable draw.

With Rayan Cherki, Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue and Michael Olise supplying him, Mbappe is a good bet to win back-to-back Golden Boot awards.

Lionel Messi – Argentina

It could be argued that Lionel Messi’s tally of 13 goals in 26 World Cup appearances is slightly underwhelming given the talent he possesses.

However, he is still regularly hitting the target for Inter Miami and Argentina, so it would be foolish to suggest he is not a contender to win the Golden Boot.

Intriguingly, he has never previously claimed the prize, which is an unusual anomaly on the CV of a player who many people believe is the greatest of all time.

Algeria, Austria and Jordan represent an easy start for Messi in the group stage, and he could be in contention for the Golden Boot when the knockout phase starts.

Erling Braut Haaland – Norway

While players who reach the latter stages of the tournament have an advantage in the Golden Boot race, Norway’s Erling Braut Haaland may be in the mix.

He became only the sixth footballer in history in October – and first in 53 years – to reach 50 international goals in fewer than 50 caps.

Haaland scored 16 goals in eight qualifiers as Norway swept into the World Cup, and he will be desperate to make his mark on the biggest stage.

A Haaland-fuelled run to the quarter-finals is not beyond the realms of possibility for Norway, which makes odds of 14/1 for him to be top scorer look extremely tempting.
