Originally set to play a World Cup playoff on March 31 against the winner of the Bolivia vs. Suriname clash, Iraq's Lions of Mesopotamia could also benefit from a possible withdrawal by Iran.

Iran's geopolitical situation could jeopardize the country's participation in the 2026 World Cup, which could see Iraq qualify directly while the United Arab Emirates would be pushed into the playoffs.

However, the situation remains far from clear. According to The Sun, Iraqi airspace is currently closed and will remain so for at least four weeks. This means that 40% of the squad would be unable to travel, while head coach Graham Arnold is stuck in Qatar due to canceled flights in the region.

Additionally, some players and staff members do not have visas for Mexico or the United States.
