Vasco enter the World Cup break in a delicate state. A 1-0 defeat to Atlético-MG at São Januário means the team will remain in the relegation zone for more than 50 days until the Brasileirão restarts.

According to Globo.com, the hiatus is vital for the club to recover players for a decisive second half of the season.

Midfielder Jair, who suffered a serious knee injury, returned to partial group training last month. The club avoids setting timelines, but there is an expectation he will resume full training without restrictions after the break.

The period also allows fitness work for recent returnees from the treatment room, notably Paulo Henrique and Cuiabano.

Regaining confidence is a priority, with Brenner the emblematic case. Signed for about R$ 30 million, he is not being pushed out and the club believe he can rediscover form to help in the run-in.

Others from the first window have underwhelmed, with confidence cited as an issue. Saldivia lost his place after individual errors and is among the most criticised by supporters. Marino Hinestroza has not secured a starting role, and Spinelli has yet to convince in attack.

Some 2025 standouts have not replicated last season’s levels, including Nuno Moreira and Paulo Henrique.

The squad are due back on the 22nd, giving Renato Gaúcho close to a month with his players before fixtures resume. He anticipates reinforcements during the period, but views time on the training pitch as central to rebuilding belief and collecting results to climb out of trouble.
