The 2026 World Cup in North America is slowly but surely coming to an end. Some Bayern pros have already been eliminated—for some, far too early given their own expectations. Vincent Kompany will have to deal with this as well.

Of course, the Belgian coach at Bayern Munich also benefits from the fact that many players will rejoin the team earlier than originally planned and be able to participate in preseason training.

Still, coming home with a disappointment is certainly not ideal. After all, the large contingent of DFB fans at the record champions will be anything but happy after the team clearly failed to meet its stated goal for the third consecutive World Cup.

Kohler believes Kompany has a responsibility

That’s why Bayern Munich needs to address each player individually and have conversations with them during this summer’s preseason. Jürgen Kohler, the 1990 World Cup champion, believes the coach also has a responsibility here.

When the German team was eliminated, Bayern star Jonathan Tah, of all people, missed the decisive penalty kick. “A moment like that hurts, of course—no question about it. You can’t just shake off a missed penalty kick at a World Cup,” Kohler now explained to the Abendzeitung München.

He added: “But Jonathan Tah is a seasoned pro who’s been through a lot. The important thing is not to let that one moment define you. In soccer, you always get another chance to prove yourself.”

Vincent Kompany now has a special role to play, according to the former national team player. And he warns: “In situations like this, the coach is also called upon to show his humanity. Vincent Kompany knows from his own career how to deal with pressure and disappointment. He has to make Jonathan feel: We trust you; you’re important to this team. Sometimes that kind of support helps more than any tactical talk,” Kohler continued.
