The World Cup’s quickest goal mark has stood for over 20 years, the sub-10-second barrier still untouched.

According to L'Équipe, players at this World Cup, running from 11 June to 19 July, could target breaking 10 seconds one day.

Hakan Sükür holds the record at 10.8 seconds for Türkiye, scored in the 2002 tournament against South Korea in a 3-2 win.

That strike eclipsed Václav Mašek’s 15-second effort for Czechoslovakia in 1962 against Mexico, a 3-1 victory. Since 2002 nobody has truly neared Sükür’s mark. Clint Dempsey netted after 30 seconds for the United States against Ghana in 2014, a 2-1 win, which places him in the top five yet still far back.

The other names in the top 10 are Ernst Lehner at 24 seconds for Germany in 1934, Bryan Robson at 27 seconds for England in 1982, Emile Veinante and Arne Nyberg both at 35 seconds in 1938 for France and Sweden, Bernard Lacombe at 37 seconds for France in 1978, plus Florian Albert and Constantin Stanciu at 50 seconds for Hungary in 1962 and Romania in 1930.
