FIFA has pushed World Cup final ticketing to new heights, with prices for Sunday’s 21:00 kick-off at MetLife Stadium, near New York, spiralling far beyond initial levels.
Initial public prices were set in four bands: category one at 11,000 dollars, category two at 5,500, category three at 3,600 and the cheapest at 800. According to ABC News, those already steep figures have since roughly tripled, with top seats reaching 32,970 dollars.
Gianni Infantino has defended the approach by citing the strength of the US entertainment market, and at a Los Angeles economic forum in early May he said FIFA must apply market prices. The governing body has also said that around one percent of seats were sold at 60 dollars.
On FIFA’s own resale platform, which charges a 15% commission, premium listings have even appeared at two million dollars, though it is unclear if any sold. Infantino quipped that if anyone paid that sum he would personally deliver a hot dog and a Coca-Cola to ensure they enjoyed the night.
FIFA has yet to confirm how many tickets will go to the two finalists. Previous tournaments have typically seen about seven thousand per team, varying with capacity and allocations to sponsors, partners, hospitality and the general public. With MetLife Stadium holding 82,500, the finalists could receive roughly 20 to 25% of the total between them.
