Erling Haaland’s brace in Norway’s 3-2 win over Senegal helped secure the European nation’s place in the 2026 World Cup Round of 32.
The victory moves Stale Solbakken’s side to six points from two matches after they also beat Iraq 4-1 in their opening assignment at the tournament.
Marcus Holgrem Pedersen opened the scoring at New York New Jersey Stadium on the cusp of half-time to give Norway a slender lead at the break over Senegal.
City’s clincal striker, Haaland, then doubled his nation’s advantage three minutes after the interval when he fired into the top corner from just inside the area.
Ismaila Sarr then pulled a goal back, but the 2025/26 Premier League Golden Boot winner scored his second of the encounter with a sweet volley from close range.
There was still time for Senegal to grab a second in stoppage time through Sarr again, but it was Norway who prevailed to book their place in the knockout phase.
It means Haaland currently has four goals at the 2026 World Cup – tied with Kylian Mbappe and one behind Lionel Messi – before his side’s final Group I match against France.
Didier Dechamps’ team also advanced into the Round of 32 with a game remaining after a 3-0 win over Iraq.
Rayan Cherki was introduced on 68 minutes with the victory all-but sealed following Mbappe’s brace and Ousmane Dembele’s strike on 66’.
And Rayan Ait Nouri’s Algeria sealed a precious win which kept their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive following a hard-fought 2-1 win over Jordan.
City’s left-back started the contest and played 85 minutes, but his nation found themselves a goal down at the break after Nizar Al Rashdan scored 10 minutes before half-time.
Former Blues maestro Riyad Mahrez provided the assist for Nadir Benbouali who equalised for Algeria before Amine Gouiri euphorically scored in the final 10 minutes to seal the triumph.
It means Ait-Nouri and Co. face Austria in their final Group J assignment knowing a win would book their place in the Round of 32.
