Daniel Muñoz’s deflected strike against DR Congo sealed Colombia’s place in the Round of 32 of the World Cup. Los Cafeteros are the seventh team to join the knockout stages as they won both of their first two games in Group K before facing Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal.
FC Bayern’s superstar Luis Díaz produced another solid performance, although the Crystal Palace fullback won “Man of the Match” after his second goal of the tournament. Juan Quintero and Jhon Córdoba, who played for three Bundesliga clubs, played key roles in the only goal of the game twenty minutes after coming on as Colombia’s first substitutes.
Former Bayern midfielder James Rodriguez featured for Néstor Lorenzo’s side, while Augsburg’s Nathanael Mbuku came the closest to scoring the equalizer for DR Congo. Sébastien Desabre’s men will still have big chances of making the Round of 32 if they beat Uzbekistan, who will also look for their first-ever World Cup victory.
