Mike Maignan wore the France armband after Kylian Mbappé was substituted in the 77th minute of the World Cup quarter-final against Morocco on Thursday night.

Mbappé had earlier missed a first-half penalty, then broke the deadlock on 60 minutes with a superb strike from the edge of the area.

He was then replaced by Jean-Philippe Mateta, appearing to have taken a knock to his right ankle.

On this occasion the armband went to the AC Milan goalkeeper, who had first captained the side in October 2025.

In the 3-0 group-stage win over Iraq, shortly before the 90th minute, Lucas Digne took the armband for the first time.
