Despite Tunisia’s spirited 1-0 win over reigning World Champions France, the African side went out of the World Cup in the group stages following a dramatic win.
Tunisia needed Denmark to take atleast a point off Australia in their game and they had to win their game against Les Bleus, but while they did their own game, Denmark failed to grab a draw against the Socceroos. Despite the knockout, it was a rather memorable tournament for Tunisia and the victory celebrations proved that.
Tunisia may have scored only once in the tournament but the small margins truly do matter in international football, as they also conceded only one goal.
Best player of the tournament: Aissa Laidouni was arguably Tunisia’s most reliable player in three games and he even grabbed an assist against France today. He was key in breaking up play and circulating play and his ability to protect the centre-backs made sure that Tunisia conceded only goal in the tournament.
Biggest disappointment: A case can be made of the fact that if Tunisia scored more goals, they could have gone through. Wahbi Khazri returned only in the second game and his absence against Denmark proved vital, as Tunisia did create chances and opportunities against a stiff opposition.
Grade: B – Considering the talent at their disposal and the strength of the other teams, it was a pretty decent show.
