World Cup: Scotland top Group C after scrappy win over Haiti

Scotland narrowly beat Haiti in the first World Cup game for both nations in the 21st century. The Tartan Army returned to the big stage for the first time since 1998, while Haiti’s solitary World Cup experience was in West Germany in 1974.

While Canada and Qatar earned their first point in the history of the competition, Haiti’s brave effort lacked efficiency in front of goal. In a game of few chances, Scotland took all the three points courtesy of John McGinn’s deflected goal around the half-hour mark.

Both teams have no Bundesliga connection in their sides as Steve Clarke had no place for Union Berlin’s Oliver Burke and Magdeburg’s Fraser Hornby in Scotland’s squad.

Five-time champions Brazil and 2022 semi-finalists Morocco drew 1-1 in the opening game of the group on Saturday. Haiti will next face the most successful national team in World Cup history, while Morocco await Scotland in the repeat of the duel from 1998.
